99 Club: a question of happiness

An age old concept called “The 99 Club” that explores a secret of being happy!  Thank you Nithya Shanti for bringing this to my attention:

The 99 Club

Long ago, there lived a King. This King should have been content with his life, given all the riches and luxuries he had. However, this was not the case! The King always found himself wondering why he just never seemed content with his life. Sure, he had the attention of everyone wherever he went, attended fancy dinners and parties, but somehow, he still felt something was lacking and he couldn’t put his finger on it.

One day, the King had woken up earlier than usual and decided to stroll around his palace. He entered his huge living room and came to a stop when he heard someone happily singing away… following this singing…he saw that one of the servants was singing and had a very content look on his face.

This fascinated the King and he summoned this man to his chambers. The man, his servant, entered the King’s chambers as ordered. The King asked why he was so happy? To this the man replied: “Your Majesty, I am nothing but a servant, but I make enough of a living to keep my wife and children happy. We don’t need too much, a roof over our head and warm food to fill our tummy. My wife and children my inspiration, they are content with whatever little I bring home. I am happy because my family is happy.”

Hearing this, the King dismissed the servant and summoned his Wise Minister to his chambers.

The King related his personal anguish about his feelings and then related the story of the servant to his Wise Minister, hoping that somehow, he will be able to come up with some reasoning that here was a King who could have anything he wished for at a snap of his fingers and yet was not contended, whereas, his servant, having so little was extremely contended.

The Wise Minister listened attentively and come to a conclusion. He said “Your Majesty, I believe that the servant has not been made part of The 99 Club.” “The 99 Club? And what exactly is that?” the King inquired. To which the Minister replied, “Your Majesty, to truly know what The 99 Club is, you will have to do the following… place 99 Gold Coins in a bag and leave it at this servant’s doorstep, you will then understand what The 99 Club is.”

That very same evening, the King arranged for 99 Gold coins to be placed in bag at the servant’s doorstep. Although he was slightly hesitant and he thought he should have put 100 Gold Coins in the bag, but since his assistant had advised him to put 99 that is what he did.

The servant was just stepping out of his house when he saw a bag at his doorstep. Wondering about its contents, he took it into his house and opened the bag. When he opened the bag he let out a great big shout of joy…Gold Coins…so many of them. He could hardly believe it. He called his wife to show her the coins and they were besides themselves. He then took the bag to a table and emptied it out and began to count the coins. Doing so, he realized that there were 99 coins and he thought it was an odd number so he counted again, and again and again only to come to the same conclusion…99 Gold Coins.

He began to wonder, what could have happened to that last 1 coin? For no one would leave 99 coins. He began to search his entire house, looked around his backyard for hours, not wanting to lose out on that one coin. Finally, exhausted, he decided that he was going to have to work harder than ever to make up for that 1 Gold coin to make his entire collection an even 100 Gold Coins. He got up the next morning, in an extremely horrible mood, shouting at the children and his wife for his delay, not realizing that he had spent most of the night up conjuring ways of working hard so that he had enough money to buy himself that gold coin. He went to work as usual only not in his usual best mood, singing happily and whistling all day. He didn’t even seem to notice that the King was watching him as he grumpily did his daily errands.

Seeing the man’s attitude change so drastically, the King was puzzled. He promptly summoned his Wise Minister to his chambers. The King related his thoughts about the servant and once again, his assistant listened. The King could not believe that the servant who until yesterday had been singing away and was happy and content with his life had taken a sudden change of attitude, even though he should have been happier after receiving the gold coins.

To this the Wise Minister replied “Ah but your Majesty, the servant has now officially joined The 99 Club.” He explained: “The 99 Club is just a name given to those people who have everything but yet are never content, therefore they are always working hard and striving for that extra 1 to round it out to 100! We have so much to be thankful for and we can live with very little in our lives, but the minute we are given something bigger and better, we want even more! We are not the same happy contented person we used to be, we want more and more and by wanting more and more we don’t realize the price we pay for it. We lose our sleep, our happiness; we hurt the people around us just as a price to pay for our growing needs and desires. That is what joining The 99 Club is all about.”

Hearing this the King decided that from that day onwards, he was going to start appreciating all the little things in life. Striving for more is always good, but lets not strive so hard and for so much that we lose all those near and dear to our heart, we shouldn’t compromise our happiness for moments of luxuries!

As we flush the Toilet from the last 8 Years of the Bush Administration please consider the following thought from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

“Cowardice asks the question, Is it safe? Expediency asks the question, Is it politic? Vanity asks the question, Is it popular? But conscience asks the question, Is it right? And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but he must take it because his conscience tells him that it is right.”

1. All of us might wish at times that we lived in a more tranquil world, but we don’t. And if our times are difficult and perplexing, so are they challenging and filled with opportunity.

2. Few will have the greatness to bend history itself; but each of us can work to change a small portion of events, and in the total; of all those acts will be written the history of this generation.

3. It is not enough to understand, or to see clearly. The future will be shaped in the arena of human activity, by those willing to commit their minds and their bodies to the task.

"paradox of our time": a message from someone kool!

CORRECTION:

Although George Carlin is attributed
to the following quote….
Here is the link to a story about the actual origin

www.snopes.com:
Either way it is filled with great contemplations of our life and times.

George Carlin shows us ... Ourselves
George Carlin shows us … Ourselves

Not A Message by George Carlin:

The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider Freeways, but narrower viewpoints.

We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less.
We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time.
We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness.

We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom.

We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values.
We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often.

We’ve learned how to make a living, but not a life.
We’ve added years to life not life to years.
We’ve been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor.

We’ve conquered outer space but not inner space.
We’ve done larger things, but not better things.
We’ve cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul.
We’ve conquered the atom, but not our prejudice.

We write more, but learn less.
We plan more, but accomplish less.
We’ve learned to rush, but not to wait.
We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but we communicate less and less.

These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small character, steep profits and shallow relationships.  These are the days of two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes.

These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill.

It is a time when there is much in the showroom window and nothing in the stockroom.  A time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to share this insight, or to just hit delete…

  • Remember; spend some time with your loved ones, because they are not going to be around forever.
  • Remember, say a kind word to someone who looks up to you in awe, because that little person soon will grow up and leave your side.
  • Remember, to give a warm hug to the one next to you, because that is the only treasure you can give with your heart and it doesn’t cost a cent.
  • Remember, to say, ‘I love you’ to your partner and your loved ones, but most of all mean it. A kiss and an embrace will mend hurt when it comes from deep inside of you.
  • Remember to hold hands and cherish the moment for someday that person will not be there again.
  • Give time to love, give time to speak! And give time to share the precious thoughts in your mind.

AND ALWAYS REMEMBER:

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

If you don’t send this to other people….Who cares?

Gandhi & his March to the Sea for Salt…
What is Our Symbol Today?

When Gandhi marched the Indians to the sea to get their own salt and avoid the British tax on salt.  The British beat the Indians down… Gandhi was very clear not to fight back but still to stand strong as peaceful warriors holding their moral and ethical ground.  They embarrassed the British into leaving the country less then 1 year later… The British understood that their time there was over… the British were no longer welcome…

Y Yoga Movie Prod Still Statue of Liberty

Well I am not sure when our government became the enemy of the people but with all that is going on it would seem that the government is definitely not looking out for our / Main Street interests.  Our government has been asleep at the wheel for 8 years now giving us the wrong information…

Our leadership has been pushing the concept of Happiness through consumption instead of through service as well as thoughts of creating fear by chasing security… scaring us at every opportunity, in every speech!
We should instead understand what Benjamin Franklin professed with “if we forgo liberty for security we deserve neither“!

So the BIG QUESTION of BIG MIND is what are the symbols we as a free people use in this day and age to reflect, what is going on in our government is NOT OK… How do we empower our selves and our message to get back to the original intention of…. We hold these truths to be self evident, the right to Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness….

I love that this Iraqi reporter expressed in a moment of peaceful fearless disregard for his own safety what most of us would have liked to … he has created a Tiananmen Square moment in history… We need to follow his ambitious lead to free speech for that is where freedom and liberty are found.  Remember he threw a shoe not a bomb.  We all know how disgusting and lawless our administration has behaved, torture, no oversight, etc…  They have brought us to the abyss!  What do we do now to take a stand and begin the healing of our fragile and injured planet and people?

Please share your thoughts and ideas here as comments… We need to begin a dialogue on the internet of collective consciousness! We need to figure out what our march to the sea is and how we can peacefully and forcefully get the message across that what is going on is NOT OK!  We need to get back to the intention of what a patriot is and what it is to be an American as well as a global citizen!

in Peace with light & Love,

Arthur
